About Nonye Ikegwuoha

Nonye Ikegwuoha is an established presence in the New York art world who creates work spanning drawing, painting, and sculpting mediums, as well as filmmaking. With a commitment to prioritizing emotional value over aesthetics in creative process, Nonye Ikegwuoha has a particular focus on environmental preservation and the principles of sustainability embodied in indigenous African traditions.

Mr. Ikegwuoha earned an architectural degree at the University of Lagos in Nigeria, and he has been involved in numerous design-build projects, including the creation of an education and rehabilitation center in Abuja, Nigeria. Among his ventures is developing an art and recreational retreat in the same city.

He has also run architectural firms in Lagos and Shanghai, China, and the stressful situations and heightened emotions involved with his professional endeavors in this capacity provided creative material for his art. African art and culture is also inspirational to Mr. Ikegwuoha, who views African art as a means of freeing oneself from fears, terrors, and demons by giving them form.

Ikegwuoha is reclusive and passionate about his art and participation. His selective exhibitions include the Martin Luther King Jr tribute exhibition “MLK50: Beyond the Balcony” in Memphis, Tennessee in 2018, in which he was chosen as lead artist from a selection of artists around the world. Much of his works are private collections.

Nonye Ikegwuoha is widely exhibited in solo showings at such galleries as at the Agora Gallery in Manhattan and in group shows.
